It is not easy to be a good manager, there are interests to balance, results to deliver, people to develop. Just because somebody is a technical master or smart does not mean the person is automatically a good manager. In fact, it's quite common for the contrary to happen.
A managerial role should be taken seriously. In order to succeed, the individual's willingness and ability are necessary but not sufficient. And because it's both an art and a science, one can learn and practice and be better at it. But those who assume that just having been in a company for long or having domain expertise will automatically make one a good manager, that is an unforgivable mistake that will unfairly hurt a team, and damage a lot of careers.
